Comments:
I have been shopping at the Romeo Salvation Army since it opened. The employees are always friendly and helpful and I find great deals on next to new clothing.
i will agree that the shoes are really over priced. i have consistantly seen prices on shoes which are higher than tj maxx and mashalls which is just silly... even for new shoes at SA the prices should not be higher than at tj maxx and mashalls.
The prices are not too high. they are high intially because the markers (even ones who do know a lot) cannot possibly know which brands are more desirable than others. which brands are desirable change (go in and out of style) and differnt fabrics are more and less desirable. and items can become vintage and desirable. anyone who is a dealer in clothing knows this is true.
because dealers buy at the SA stores the markers do what is logical - they mark items high, figure that the items which are desirable will sell to dealers who know their value and can still make a profit reselling them. they then figure the dealers who want more profit will wait for those items to go to half (if the items are still there). they then figure the dealers will buy the items 5 for 5 (if the items are still there).
for the \'regular shoppers\' - the markers figure that if a person genuinely just wants a yellow top, they will buy one on 5 for 5 (which is a lot cheaper than walmart). they figure that if the \'regular shopper\' wants a better brand, they will pay more for it (A&F is still a lot cheaper at SA than at consignment shops, ebay and the mall).
basically, the SA is not expensive. it is sometimes iritating that an item i want is more than i want to pay for it.. but how is that any different than at marshalls, macy\'s or khols for that matter?
if you want clothing for cheap - don\'t go to SA - buy at rummage sales and yard sales. shopping at SA is relaxing, recreational a lot more fun than at Walmart.
I would have to say yes in faxed soem seal may seem very much out there in price but at the same time we try our very best to give our familys and friends with in the area the very best price that we can thin k of with doing some online look ups on how much the frist cost was then making it lower then that by alot more. we try to do the most good not only for god but also for our familys and friends that come in to our stores
love the store workers/arc member and the familys/friends may God be with all of us
As a person who both donates and shops at the Salvation army, I agree that the prices at some stores are TOO expensive. I donate my clothing so that people who can\'t afford to shop at the stores can find some bargains but the bargains are not bargains anymore. I saw a comforter that was used priced $50.00 bucks at the Rochester store. While I understand that they use the money to run their rehabilitation homes I still think they need to price the clothing within reason.
I have 4 children and have been a Sal. Army shopper for 2 years now. I was thrilled to find the brand name clothing that my \"tweens\" wanted at affordable prices, I also enjoyed finding items that my husband and I needed. We have struggled financially these past 2 years and depended on Sal.Army to help get us through, however, I was shocked by the women\'s clothing prices yesterday in Brighton. $5.99 and $6.99 for a used long-sleeved t-shirt was too high. I do not resell items, I use them for my family and am very dissapointed at how high the prices are going.
That store has nothing but a remote location going for it. Sooooo expensie. I will never go back. During the first weeks of openings the prices were so high and no color discounts, etc. I guess the Sal Army folks got their pick of goods for free and the remaining items need higher prices to make up the difference. And what\'s wrong with buying to resell? Don\'t be a hater of someone trying to make some money. If you think that the Sal Army packs up and pays postage/storage/cost for boxes/shipping etc., to give children around the world common goods, you are crazy. Check closer, I bet they shred clothes and throw out items. They make plenty of money and then pan handle on the streets at the holidays.
yes,i agree....not too crazy about the selection, price and employees at the oxford store. i was so excited that it was opening because i live in lake orion and usually drive to romeo but i have yet to find anything much worth purchasing at oxford and have not yet run into a nice employee. i too feel that i can find better deals on meijer and kohls discount racks....and i DO NOT resell items, i have a 2 year old and a college student who need things. we love to make a day of it, but we will not be going back to oxford anytime soon.
Am I hearing these so called \"dealers\" correctly??? They are complaining that SA\'s prices are to high for them to \"resell\" and make a profit? So in essence you are saying that it is not fair for them to do it because lord forbid you cannot afford to buy cheap clothes to resell at a higher price yourself, wow now that is pure greed! At least the SA puts back into the communities providing new toys for poor children at Christmas, or new coats and hats for the winter, and those are only 2 of the things they do!!! I feel that their prices are high, but I also think to myself that since I cannot afford to donate money, this is the least I can do to help my neighbors when in need! I think it should be illegal to buy from a charity and resell at higher prices, that is just plain low. Thanks to the SA for all you do for our communities, we need you and will continue to do so.
God Bless.
i just want to say that Salvation army is doing the most good and we are thankful for you.i want to find out if the 10 for 5 sale will continue or is just for this month only
I feel the prices are too high. When the poor can\'t afford to shop here (our family) then I have to wonder what is thrifty about these stores.
We have shopped at Auburn and John R for over 10 years. We used to buy loads of useful items we could not otherwise afford. Now we find better deals on clearence racks at the local retailers.
Once in a great while we find an excellent deal but it is far and between.
I remember what it was like before white tags. Most of our clothing was purchased there until the price hikes and white tags.
I have been shopping at the Salvation Army for over a year now. I love it.. But their prices are getting way way to much. They receive these items for free and pay for these big stores and raise this used clothing to the max. I can go to resale shops and get better prices on name brand stuff without going through thousands of items. These stores sell things to help people, I understand, but in all reality when people can\'t even afford to shop here... Just seems they need to lower their clothing prices, For example an American Eagle T Shirt for boys has been worn already and they want $5.99. Come on 2 0r 3 would be more the price. Then on their color of the week clothing they pull most of the items and even change tags. They have hardly any of those tags on Monday Morning. They have a good thing going, don\'t ruin it. As for the store on M24 in oxford the employees are RUDE! The two women at the front anyways! NEED PEOPLE SKILLS!!!
I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT THE 10 FOR 5 SALE IS A WONDERFUL IDEA, I RECENTLY START SHOPPING AT YOUR STORES I SHOP FOR DONATION TO AFRICAN COUNTRIES, THE 10 FOR 5 SALE HAS REALLY HELP US A LOT, GOD WILL BLESS YOU ALL, I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THE SALE COULD INCLUDE ALL COLOURS, BECAUSE USUALLY THERE IS NOT A LOT OF CLOTHING IN THE COLOURS THAT ARE ON SALE AND ALSO I WANT TO KNOW WHAT ARE THE ITEMS ON WHITE TAGS AND HOW COME THEY DONT EVER GO ON SALE
i don\'t think the SA stores are overpriced. it makes sense to price items higher and let them either sell for that price or go to 25% or 50% off or in 5 for $5.00. the people who donate better items would be irritated to find that the better items they donated are sold for nothing. i assume they donated better items to help the people the SA helps. also, the donated goods are tax deductable and those who donate them estimate their value - i would assume they estimate higher when they donate a coach purse than a st. johns bay purse.
however, i do have a problem with the store workers skimming off the better items or marking them lower to buy themselves. i think that is basically stealing from a charity. if the SA wants to sell on ebay or sell on-line on a website, they should. goodwill has an on-line website auction. but all the items donated to SA, goodwill, etc are seen as charitable contributions. they are meant to be sold at a decent price (the most possible) to benefit the needy. that does not mean the items should be under-priced and sold to the workers at the stores or just be taken by the workers at the stores.
if a SA store gets a high-quality item and marks it higher, i (as a person who resells goods) would pay more for it... or not. i think the store does well to price better items higher and them progress down in price to where they are sold.. regardless of what the item is.
Overpriced thrift stores will claim they are experiencing \"increases in costs\" but really they are not doing a good job keeping up with the current prices of NEW clothing. FYI, the Clinton Township store has a close competitor (Sunshine Thrift) that has been there for years. They are much cheaper and have a great selection. I heard they are under new management as well if you haven\'t been there in awhile. If SA is listening, they will get it right!
Part of the problem of Salvation Army pricing goods beyond what many would consider reasonable lies in the fact that some of the people who shop there resell the items online, and the Salvation Army wants their cut of the profit. If you are financially strapped and are shopping there for your family, you are considered collateral damage as far as they are concerned. Too bad that the \"helping the poor\" part has fallen by the wayside, but you can thank the resellers and SalArmy\'s own greed for that. Some used designer clothing is even cheaper at Plato\'s Closet than it is at many of the Sal\'s, especially the two Utica stores.
I love the thrill of the hunt shopping at S.A. I find very unique and odd furnishings and good quality clothing. However, S.A. prices are way too high. Sometimes they are just ridiculous. I am a very serious shopper. I shop from high end retail to second hand and thrift stores. You must be a shrewd shopper when trying to save money at S.A. You can get brand new clothing/items at Target, Marshalls etc. cheaper or equal in price. Especially if you shop the clearance racks or off season. I am not against S.A. but sometimes the prices are no better than the mall. All items are donated so they are making 100% profit. A used T-shirt should not cost almost $5.00. I agree with the overpriced remarks. And I thought it was just me :-).
The stores I\'ve been to are all overpriced! And the 10 for 5 and the 5 for 5 sales for a certain color tag are overrated. The employees are pulling the sale color tagged items off the rack!
the lakeside store is overpriced. they actually pay someone to do online research to find out prices of items and then sell them for that price. i may as well shop online if it\'s the same price
I do commend the s.a on all the great things they do for our community, but i will have to say that i\'ve been laid off for 3yrs.now and started to shop at the s.a. just to try and pinch afew dollars during these very hard economic times.well i had to stop shopping here because the prices went to high.for example 16 months ago i bought a pair of slightly used levi jeans for 4.99.which to me was a descent savings.every little bit helps.i went into the same store last week,(Sterling Heights)and found the exact pair of jeans marked at 12.99.thats a 100 and 10percent increace.not only that item but all their clothing items.I can shop at wal-marts or k-marts for those prices. And there new items.i used to donate anywhere from 800 to athousand dollars worth of goods every yr.when i was working.I,m sorry to say that i wont b doing this any longer.I just dont feel it\'s right to take advantage of the general consumer while times are tough. We as a community should b working together.I do understand small increaces every yr.to keep with inflation.but these were just afew examples i gave.i\'ve seen jeans there as high as 35.dollars.thats an outrage.why would anyone pay that at a thrift store for one.And two people will just shop regular stores for those prices.I know I will.\"Regretfully\"The lost consumer...
I agree with the overpricing of merchandise. I am an avid fan of Walmart and notice that some of Walmart prices are actually lower than Salvation Army pricing. What the managers need to do is to do a cost study analysis at various dept. stores like Walmart, Kmart and such and see what they should charge for things like - dishware, clothing and such.
I agree that the Salvation Army\'s are overpriced! I have been a thrift store shopper for years(20+) and they have normally been a place to find good bargains. Over the last few years (about 4) Sal Army\'s prices have increased dramatically!!!! With the economy being so bad here in Michigan, I too hear the constant complaints from customers when I shop. I understand they are providing a service to the community, but I also understand that the majority of their goods are donated. It just seems rather unfair to me to charge 9.99 for ( not so gently at time) used shoes that are barley brand name or 8.99 for a frying pan that you can pick up brand new for just a few bucks more. I applaud the works of the Salvation Army in our communities, but their Thrift Stores need to lower their prices.
I love the salvation army. It\'s like going to a garage sale all year long! My only complaint is the Clarkston and new Sterling Heights store are way overpriced. The other atores are very reasonable. Thank you to the White Lake Store who generously donated some gift certificates to Relay For Life in West Bloomfield!
Give the SA a break - they do great work. Overpriced? Not a chance.
Since my husbands work has taken a $1.00 an hour away from his paycheck, the Army has really helped my family with clothing, especially the 5 for $5.00! I know people are out there trying to resell to make an extra buck, so don\'t take it out on the Army their just doing what they have to to survive and help the many needy people out there. And I\'ve seen dishes there at White Lake, that we\'re priced at $15.00 for 4 place settings, (4 plates, 4 bowls, 4 cups & 4 saucers) Brand New still in the box!
Thanks Salvation Army, Keep up the Good work!
ARC
hi, i do shop at the Salvation Army as part of my job reselling items. However, I know the Salvation Army is my wholesaler. For anyone to write that your thrift shops are too expensive for them to make a profit reselling is insulting and silly. It also shows a lack of knowledge and resourcefulness. The United States is having financial difficulties, but it is still the land of opportunity. Amongst those opportunities is the fact that the United States has vast piles of \'stuff\'. if you need to rely solely on the Salvation Army for your \'stock\' it is time to change your line of work.
I think the SA is great and appreciate them for items to help me provide for my family with items i resell and use for myself rather than having to buy lesser quality goods at Walmart.
Salvation Army sells their items to put back fund their programs not for you to resell and make a profit off them. They do great things for people and deserve every penny they get. Maybe you should read up about them on their website and learn more on what the Salvation Army is all about. They help others in need in several areas. They are not here for you to make a profit off them.
I am a daily shopper at the S.. thrift stores,I buy to resell. Here is the hugest problem they have especially the white lake store.
The items are so overpriced that the Poor and financially struggling people who really need the stuff, cannot afford it! I hear the comments all time from shoppers around me as I spend sometimes hour in there. I heard one family say, wow we need dishes so badly, but they are 129.99! Then they said lets go to wallmart and find some for much cheaper! The other issue is that myself and other dealers that look to buy to resell to make a living, we find that most of the stuff is priced higher that the actual value!Their prices seem to increase continuously! In this economy, we are all just trying to survive.Come on! Salvation Army, lower you prices! It would be a win win for all of us including you, the financially struggling public, the dealers would buy more, and you would sell so much more! More profit for all of us!Whomever is pricing your collectibles, has got to be so old school. they are marked insanely high! WAy WAy over the actual value! I have a feeling the are using antique books from back in the day for pricing. Times have changed and those books are not not close to accurate any longer.I do have to say though, that the New Clarkston store has their items priced very reasonable. Thank you S.A.Clarkston!Cannot wait til garage sale season, so we can all get bargains!thank you for time in reading this.I hope and pray you take all into consideration.
God Bless us all!
Sincerely,
BLC
