Originally opened in the spring of 1997 in the Auburn-John R Square Shopping Plaza, the store occupied 30,124 sq. ft. of the former (A&P) building which it shared with then next door neighbor “Whirley Ball”. High shopper volume and strong donor support led to the stores expansion in 2003, which increased its size to 40,213 sq. ft. At that time it took on the distinction of being the largest Salvation Army Thrift Store in the country. In 2007 the sales floor was increased further when a small boutique area was added by reclaiming space once used for a training room. Additional remodeling, executed in the spring of 2009 was done as both a matter of maintenance, and to keep pace with shopping trends. This expansive store has 7 fitting rooms, plenty of free parking and a convenient donation drop off center located at the rear of the building. It provides employment to 50 people who are assisted regularly by 15 ARC Program beneficiaries and 4 volunteers.
Special events held as ’Rochester Hills Exclusive’ through the years include Jewelry Sales (2002 and 2005), Bridal Shows and Sales (2004 and 2006. Most notably, an Antiques and Collectibles Auction, held annually in the spring at this site marked its 5th year in 2009.

2013 Auction
Raise your paddles and raise funds for The Salvation Army at the 9th annual Rochester Hills spring antique and collectible auction on Saturday, May 4, 2013.
Beginning at 9 a.m., auction-goers will have the opportunity to preview nearly 600 lots that will be available for bid starting at 11 a.m. The auction is expected to end by 5 p.m.
“Shoppers are often surprised to see what comes across the auction floor. From vintage housewares to full-size cars, we’ve seen it all at our annual spring auction,” said Brian Smith, manager of the Rochester Hills thrift store. “Last year the auction experienced record-breaking sales, raising just over $38,000. We’re hoping for another prosperous year, as all proceeds benefit a great cause.”
All proceeds from the auction benefit The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Centers, independently funded, 180-day residential rehabilitation programs for adults.
“I started shopping at thrift stores to furnish my home, but it quickly turned into a hobby,” said Jordan Tasich, veteran Salvation Army thrift store shopper and Rochester Hills local. “All the unique, vintage collector’s items come out during the Rochester Hills auction. It’s a great opportunity to find pieces that you never thought you’d come across, like the Star Trek Next Generation Phaser laser pointer I bid on last year.”
This year auction-goers can expect to see antique and collectable pieces including a French sterling silver desk caddy, a mechanical singing bird cage, various autographed tchotchke, musical instruments, and many more unique items. Among the pieces expected to ring in at higher bids are a prayer card signed by Mother Teresa, a circa-1890 temperance tea cup, a 36-in. Heinrich Handwerk porcelain doll, a 1960’s baseball signed by Hank Aaron, a mini Cleveland Cavaliers basketball signed by Lebron James and a Hull Pottery Little Red Riding Hood cookie jar.
