2013 Doing The Most Good Week - Posted 5/9/13
8th annual Doing the Most Good Week (DMG Week), May 9 – 19, 2013, including a community-wide drive at the GM Renaissance Center.
From 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, do-gooders are invited to clean out their closets and drop off gently used clothing, furniture and electronics at the Salvation Army trucks located in the GM parking lot on Atwater Street across from the Beaubien parking garage. Walk-up and drive-up item drop offs are welcome.
Contributors are invited to enjoy hot chocolate and coffee until 9 a.m. courtesy of The Salvation Army via a mobile canteen truck. Canteen trucks are a part of The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services, providing food, temporary shelter, blankets, communications, pastoral counseling, emergency lighting, clean-up kits and referrals to Salvation Army centers to first responders, survivors and emergency personnel during times of need
“We are very excited to kick off a series of Doing the Most Good Week donation drives with an event at the GM Renaissance Center,” said Merle Miller, administrator of The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center. “The Ren Cen sees incredible traffic every day, and we hope that those who work in the Ren Cen, its businesses and the public will stop by to donate their unused, unwanted items.”
In addition to drive at the GM Renaissance Center, The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center will be posting donation trucks at various locations throughout the metropolitan Detroit:
Thursday, May 16:
- Clinton Township’s Pine Ridge Senior Living will be hosting a donation drive for residents in the facility’s activity room from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Salvation Army staff will be available to assist with moving larger items, such as furniture from apartments directly to The Salvation Army truck.
Friday, May 17:
- The City of Roseville will host a community donation drive at the City Office Complex located at Gratiot and Common Rd. The drive will take place for two days (May 17-18) and donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, May 18:
- Northville’s County Club Village will host its annual community-wide donation drive from 9:15 a.m. to noon. Every year, the community of more than 550 homes collects goods for the ARC. All Northville residents are welcome to participate.
- Saline’s York Place Subdivision will host a community donation drive from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., The Salvation Army Truck will proceed to homes within the subdivision for larger items, such as furniture.
The community is also encouraged to kick off their spring cleaning by donating gently used clothing, electronics and household items at any of the 34 metro Detroit Salvation Army thrift stores during DMG Week.
“In a busy world, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day. Doing the Most Good Week is an opportunity for the community to stop and remember how easy it is to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Miller.
All proceeds from DMG Week donation drives will benefit The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Centers Program for both men and women, which are independently funded, 180-day residential rehabilitation programs for adults.

The Salvation Army Southeast Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) will host a job fair in effort to fill a wide variety of open positions at its 33 Salvation Army Thrift Stores and 3 warehouses throughout southeast Michigan. The job fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17 and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18.
“As we continue to grow and open new thrift stores, the need for staff continues to increase,” said Merle Miller, administrator of The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center, which operates the thrift stores. “Given the tight job market, we are pleased to be able to provide employment opportunities throughout the communities we serve.”
The ARC will be conducting on-site interviews and hiring for the full and part-time positions available at the ARC’s 33 thrift stores and 3 warehouses in Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Available positions include dock workers, merchandise processors, cashiers and sales clerks, truck drivers and store managers.
Individuals interested in retail management positions must have two-five years of supervisory experience to qualify, while truck driving candidates need a valid chauffeur’s licenses and DOT card to apply.
The job fair will be take place at the Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center, 1627 W. Fort Street in Detroit, in the space known as Mother Pearl’s Place at the corner of 10th Street and Fort Street.
