In 1939 The Salvation Army established the first Harbor Light in the world here in Detroit. That was the beginning of what would evolve into the largest drug rehabilitation in the State of Michigan which is now called The Eastern Michigan Salvation Army Harbor Light System. There are three primary campus locations; Detroit, Macomb County, and Monroe with a total bed capacity of 750. The Harbor Light System is also the home of the Bed and Bread Club which serves more than 1.7 million meals annually. The goal of The Salvation Army Harbor Light System for our clients is the eradication of hunger, homelessness and addiction from their lives. Harbor Light services are provided every day of the year.
Specialized programs and services offered through the Harbor Light System include:
Target Home, a program to help low-income families and individuals find permanent housing;
1-800-A-Shelter, a toll free phone line that will assist anyone in need of emergency shelter;
Evangeline Program for Women, Pregnant Women and Women with Children a substance abuse treatment program especially tailored to meet the needs of women with a particular focus on pregnant and parenting women;
MORE House, a Transitional Living program that helps men transitioning from incarceration re-enter into society;
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Substance Abuse treatment program, the first of its kind in Michigan, treating the specific substance abuse needs of the deaf and hard of hearing consumer.
Veterans Transitional Housing program, a transitional housing program to meet the need of homeless veterans, veterans can reside in the program for up to two years. The service locations are in Monroe and Detroit. A third location in Macomb County will break ground soon.
